The Power of Ketchup Review

I am not much of a reader but when I read The Power of Ketchup by author, blogger, and YouTuber Sarah Hauer, it made me want to read for fun again. The 3 main reasons why are because the book had a great plot, good length, and gave me a small town comfort vibe. Great plot The premise of the book is so unique and while the cause for all the drama is silly, the author was able to make well thought out characters that have deeper issues. The start of all the drama begins at a baseball game between two churches that have a history of rivalry and the annual baseball game is the time where each side gets to determine whose religion is "better" depending on who wins. It is at this game that a little girl accidentally spills some ketchup on the bottom of the scoreboard after requesting wayyyyyy too much ketchup. But unbeknownst to the little girl, a devout lady sees the splattered ketchup and believes it is the face of… Jesus. Yep that's right. Jesus. That splattered ketchup caused the town to go in a frenzy and leads to some major issues. I mean isn’t that so wild that a little girl and ketchup caused all that turmoil?!? What I love about the plot is how crazy and real it is at the same time. It’s crazy to think that ketchup can look like the face of Jesus and be a message from the Almighty, but the effects the ketchup has on people’s lives are serious.

Good Length I don’t know about you but I kinda get discouraged when reading long books, but The Power of Ketchup is a great length at coming just over 200 pages. Chapters are not long, but still make logical sense. And the text is not teeny tiny so it did not make me want to put the book down immediately. For me a good book isn’t dependent on how big it is. For example, I found the Lord of the Rings book to be pretty boring because of how long it was. I found that it was more detail and fluff rather than getting to the story. I like books that are straight to the point and can illustrate a scene in my head concisely. If a book is taking a whole spread to describe an environment, I lose interest and begin to forget where I am in the story.

That Small Town Vibe Going to a small high school with 100 other peers in my grade made me appreciate The Power of Ketchup because just like it was in my highs hook, the town where the story is set is also a tight nit community. There’s a level of comfort the book brought me as there was the small town scandals and everyone knew everything about one another. There wasn’t too few characters where I got bored, and there weren’t too many characters where I felt lost the whole time. Summary If you have $4 (for Kindle) or $13 (for paperback), I would 10/10 recommend The Power of Ketchup by Sarah Hauer and checking out her other books (Shattered Crystal & Between Layers of Earth) at sarahhauer.com That website has all her books, ways you can connect with her, YouTube channel, and her blog.
