YouTube Thoughts

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

One of the apps that I have been using a lot more since quarantine is YouTube. Before I would watch some of my favorite YouTubers but since quarantine I have been watching anything from cooking to house tours. This has allowed me to discover knew YouTubers and has allowed me to learn more. And while YouTube has brought me countless hours of entertainment the past few weeks, there are some things that I wish YouTube would add or change.

Discover/ Search Feature

I find that finding new content creators is more difficult than it has to be. For example, I tried finding new vloggers since many of the ones I used to watch have now gone onto different projects or stopped vlogging overall. And for those that do not know, vlogging is where people video tape what they are doing on a regular basis. Sometimes people will do daily vlogs, or choose certain days out of the week. So anyways, I wanted to discover knew vloggers, but when I typed into the search bar "vloggers", it came up with videos on "how to vlog, best vlogger camera", and other videos on HOW to vlog. In general I find that YouTube's discover feature to be sub par for if you are trying to find YouTubers in a specific genre. But it is also understandable since YouTube is used for such a variety of things, so it would be hard to categorize things from broad to specific.

Design/User Experiance

I like how YouTube is easy to use on the phone because when you want to look at other things, you can still watch your video at the bottom of the screen while you are looking for the next video to watch. But on the desktop version I find it much more difficult to do so. For example, I was watching an apartment tour video, and I wanted to check out the persons home page to see what kind of content she created. But when I clicked the persons name, the video I was watching went away. So instead I had to put the video in picture mode, go to the home page, and then type into the search bar the persons name, and get to the persons home page that way. When instead I could have just gone out of full screen view and clicked the persons name that is so conveniently placed under the video and above the description box. Besides the inconvenience of the desktop version, I also think the overall user experience that YouTube has to be outdated. Don't get me wrong, YouTube is very easy to navigate, but I find that the user experience could be better. It just feels as if there is no innovation happening, and maybe it's because creating the "best" user experience is not their priority. I mean it makes sense since everyone is familiar with how to use it, and its easy for anyone new to the app to figure.
