Thoughts on Gardening

Recently I worked with my mom to clean up our front yard and it made me appreciate the people that do gardening for a hobby. I am by no means a big time gardener but there was since of accomplishment when we had pulled out the bushes and planted pretty flowers. With all the tech and innovation that has occurred recently, it is nice to step back and do something that humans have been doing for years. Getting dirty made me feel like a kid again, and seeing the results was rewarding.

Aside from the sense of accomplishment gardening brings, it feels nice to bring the nature to your home. Not having to travel to a park or drive somewhere to feel connected with nature is a big convenience. Having flowers around help boost my happiness and make me feel relaxed. I found that gardening was a great way to work out while being able to see the results almost immediately. Unlike regular workouts that take months to see significant change, gardening is the same vigor but you get the sense of accomplishment right away instead of months later. In fact it has been proven that gardening can have significant health benefits such as improved memory, mood booster, and promotes healthy weight (healthline.com).

Another thing I like about gardening is that you can be as involved as you want. If I don't want to do much gardening, the sprinklers and sun do the grunt work. But if I want to get deep into gardening I could do research and expand my gardening vocabulary or I could go out and start a project. I also think the thought of having an organized gardening shed is so cute!

Being a business minded person I thought about the way Lowe's and Home Depot capitalizes on people's DIY crave. I noticed the way those stores design the layout of their gardening department make me want to buy everything and make me believe that I can accomplish anything. In fact you know how the main color at Home Depot is orange? At first glance that seems like a very bold color, but there is a deeper meaning to the clever marketing strategy. Having a strong brand name is important for any company but I recently found out that the color orange instills a feeling of excitement, empowerment, warmth, and enthusiasm (verywellmind.com). This explains why people love Home Depot and it is their go to store, at least for me it is.

What about Lowe's? Their color is blue. Blue is said to make you feel calm and peaceful. I believe that Lowe's may be taking a different strategy than Home Depot on the marketing side and trying to make people feel calm about taking on big projects.

Personally I prefer Home Depot because of the orange color and the fact that it's the main store my family and I go to for projects. I don't have a vendetta against Lowe's but I got to say its a different vibe and if I am going to be starting a project I want to feel inspired.

Every time I garden I have a deeper appreciation of the work that goes into making properties, parks, businesses, etc have great curb appeal. Honestly I feel like the gardening industry is the only industry that can not be automated, but that's a post for another time.
