The Deeper Meaning of Hummingbirds

Recently I have been seeing more hummingbirds because of the flowers that have been blooming in California. These visits have piqued my interest since they are so tiny but seem to have crazy physical abilities. This lead me to delving into some research about hummingbirds and applying this concept to other aspects of my life.

Need for Speed

These fast little creatures are gone within minutes but have very complex systems that allow them to move at incredible speeds. So fast that they are able to flap their wings 10-15 times per second.... PER second. That's crazy fast. The fact that something a fraction of the size of the worlds fastest animal can go 30 mph when a cheetah can go 50-80mph, is mind boggling. What is beautiful about the hummingbird is that over the years they have learned to use their muscles SO efficiently that they are able to go at insane speeds with minimal movement (Ed Yong).

Crazy Tongues

Aside from the crazy speeds that hummingbirds can flap their wings at, but the way they use their tongue and beak as a straw is also blazing fast. So fast that they are able to repeat the process of drinking nectar 15-20 times per second (birdsandblooms.cm).

So what does this mean?

Taking a step back from the everyday dullness and appreciating the simple wonders has helped me to be more grateful of my surroundings, and appreciate others around me.

So while hummingbirds may not interest you, I encourage you to look at something you see everyday and change the mindset towards it. Changing my mindset about everyday occurrences has helped me to feel more fulfilled. It could be how a show makes you feel or the nostalgic memories a song brings up. Whatever it is, take a moment to rethink what you thought you knew.
