Streaming Thoughts

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ have all become my go to streaming services before and during quarantine. If I had to rank them, I would rank Netflix as first, Disney+ a very very close second, and Hulu as last.

#1 Netflix

To be honest the only reason why Netflix has been placed first is because they have a pretty good line up of the kids shows from when I was younger. Shows such as Victorious, Liv and Maddie, Avatar the Last Airbender, and countless others that I was unable to watch as a kid. Other than that Netflix probably wouldn't be on the list. I mean the content on Netflix has gone downhill, and they don't have the same appeal as Disney+ where they have been able to build loyalty for decades. Netflix has only been creating it's own content for a few years, and to me it seems as if every time they come out with something new, it is popular for a month and then everyone forgets about it.

I think the only way Netflix is going to be successful long term is by bringing back old shows/movies that have a history. One of the most popular shows Netflix had was not created by Netflix, nor was it a new show. But the show did have millions of fans, and because of the loyalty and popularity of the show, it brought in a lot of subscribers.

The show I am talking about is Friends, and when Netflix took it off, it was just the beginning of Netflix not having good content. Another popular show that Netflix is getting rid of is The Office, which makes no sense, since it too has brought in millions of subscribers. The changes the Netflix keep making are not benefiting the company at all, and could harm them in the long run. It's become increasingly difficult to find movies that are similar, or new movies besides the ones Netflix creates. Another reason why I think Netflix is not living up to it's full potential is because they do not add new seasons to shows or newer movies right away. To me Netflix has become the streaming service that tends to wait out on everything, and instead tries to push out its own lackluster content.

#2 Disney +

Disney+ on the other hand, has quickly become a popular streaming service. And for good reason. They got childhood classics, to their own content. It helps that they have had decades to build a fan base, and are one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world, but I say Disney+ has the right idea. The appeal that it brings to millions of people through its classic movies, such as Bambi, and the combination of other subcategories (Marvel, Pixar)which combined brings in an even wider audience, are what makes Disney+ unlike any other streaming service. It's almost like Disney took the opposite approach of other streaming services. You see right now Netflix and Hulu are creating new content, but Disney has been able to take the content it's created over the years and bring them back to life. Plus there's the added fact that Disney has had a good track record of making quality content, so even the new shows it is creating have far more hype compared to Netflix or Hulu. I mean come on, there's been countless articles written about the new Loki show coming and other upcoming Disney+ shows, but there's hardly any articles on upcoming Netflix shows. For Netflix it's just when you are browsing through the app that you find their exclusive content. Same thing for Hulu. Heck I didn't even know Hulu had its own content! Maybe I am a bit biased towards Disney, but what can I say, Disney has been collecting and growing their fan base since it started nearly 100 years ago. So can you really blame me?

#3 Hulu

Hulu is pretty much on the same boat as Netflix but its got more features. And by features I mean the fact that Hulu updates its shows more often. Hit shows such as Grey Anatomy, This Is Us, etc are all shows on Hulu that have set days in which new episodes are released weekly. And it is why Hulu is better than Netflix. But Hulu's shows are the only reason why I like it, other than that I find their selection to be even less than Netflix.
