In La La Land Thoughts

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

We all have those movements where we kinda go into our own world and dream of the perfect world or scenario we could be in and now that I am starting to head off to my next stage in life, I have been thinking of what my future could look like. With most of my college decisions in, recently I have been thinking about the college I plan on going to and how I can make the most of the experience. Because if I am going to be in thousands of dollars of debt then I want to utilize my investment to the best of my ability. The thought of going to a university is pretty scary/exciting since I am coming from a school with a total of 400 students. Moreover, going to one of the biggest universities in America is even more nerve racking. Yes I technically have already experienced college life since I have dual enrollment with the community college, but I think a community college and a university are very different environments. Not only are universities far bigger than a community college, but student life is VASTLY different.

Community College Student Life

The student life at a community college was very unique but also not typical of what I think of university student life. At the community college everyone was doing their own thing and it didn't leave much room for friendships. This was because students being of wide age ranges, work schedules, class schedules, etc and maybe I could have done more to make more friends but I mainly focused on building my high school friendships since everyone in my high school was taking similar classes and they were more accessible than the college students. The few friends I did make at my community college did not last because it only lasted for the class that we were in together. There would be no falling out or anything, but it was just a matter of drifting apart due to outside factors. Despite there being clubs available to the student body, I found that most of the clubs conflicted with my high school schedule. Not having on campus housing also contributed to a different type of student life compared to a university. I would say that it was interesting to connect with certain peers in class and found that with the wide range of students contributed to a broader perspective. What I mean by that is with students being of various ages and times in their life, often times those people were able to bring a new perspective than the average right out of high school student. To me the community college I went to had a more mature environment whereas when I think of university, I think of parties, sports gatherings, and a more social setting. One thing that I did appreciate was getting my foot in the door to the college experience and I am looking forward to jumping in all the way at a university.

University Student Life

At a university however, it will be much different especially with dorms for certain colleges within the university. Since the university I am going to force freshman's to live on campus, it also makes those friendships a big easier to build since you will be in the same building for at least a year compared to just seeing each other in a class or two. The thought of having fitness centers, libraries, university events, concerts, sports, food, and clubs all on one campus seems so cool and exciting! Unlike a community college where the college was mostly shut down on weekends and there was not much for the students, I am looking forward to exploring the various events the university will have. And exploring a new university in it of itself is exciting. When I was a freshman in high school, my friends and I would take a free period we had to walk around the community college and explore. These were very fun and it was like we were explorers. But after the years went on and I knew the layout of the college well, the level of appreciation shifted towards the agriculture and building designs. With a university these feelings will last longer since it will be FAR bigger than the little community college I went to. New environment, new oppurtunities, and new experiences are all things I am looking forward to with university life!
