What It's Like to Be on a Liquid Diet

Updated: Apr 28, 2021

The Experience

Being on a liquid diet for 6 weeks was no walk in the park. The overall diet consisted of high calorie protein shakes, Campbell soups, and a couple of high calorie soups. Since I was not able eat solid food, I had to blend everything. Which got annoying at times to have to use the blender or pot, and clean it after every use. If I had not, all the pots would have had to be washed every single day. Anyways, I fell into a routine of drinking two Ensure Boost a day, a tomato or chicken noodle Campbell soup for lunch, and a high calorie soup for dinner. For some reason I only liked tomato soup, or a fancy chicken gnocchi soup. Other than that I also craved caramel frappuccinos. Which was inspired by the Starbucks caramel frappucinno, but since I do not like coffee, I just did it without coffee. And without the coffee, I guess all I was drinking was a caramel shake. Overall I found the diet to be simple and cheaper than eating solid food. Although, I can say without the Ensure Boost and high calorie soups every day, I would not have been able to sustain my weight. The Ensure Boost was nice because it was like drinking flavored milk, AND each bottle was 350 calories. So when I would have 2 in the morning that was 700 calories. Which was helpful since I did not have to worry so much about what I ate later since I only had 300 more calories to go in order to meet my 1,000 calorie limit. And while that is WAY less than what consumed before surgery, I could not imagine the thought of drinking THAT many Ensure's. The doctors were saying that I should have 6 Ensure Boost, along with other liquid foods. Which at first did not seem like a big deal but the drinking two Ensure's at a time was A LOT. Not only would it make me sort of nauseous from drinking so much at one time, but the texture and flavor would get annoying to drink after the first bottle. Which is why I much preferred drinking pureed soups than Ensure's. The only downside of drinking soups was that I would have to heat it up, blend it, and then clean all the things I used to make the soup, which got to be annoying having to do EVERY single day. The only soup that didn't require me to blend it was the Campbell tomato soup because all I had to do was use a pot and something to mix the water with.

Would I Recommend?

I am not health expert, but after being on a liquid diet for 6 weeks, I would NOT recommend. It take's a lot of discipline to ONLY have liquid food, and you have to be pretty structured in what you eat, and what time you eat. The only reason why I was able to successfully be on a liquid diet was because I was incapable of eating solids, but if I was given the choice to be on a liquid diet or solid food, I would pick solid food any day of the week. Now if I had to be on a soup diet, THAT would be easier since I don't have to blend it all up. There's more flexibility on what you can eat. Another reason why I would not do a liquid diet is because food got everywhere. Now for others they would not have this problem, but since my jaw was shut, I had a splint in, and if the food was not blended well then food would get stuck in places I could not reach. So I couldn't really have smoothies due to the seeds nor could I have beef. I found that food in soup form worked the best because I would add water to it to make it more liquefied.
